Simulation of Human Speech Production Applied to the Study and Synthesis of European Portuguese
نویسندگان
چکیده
A new articulatory synthesizer (SAPWindows), with a modular and flexible design, is described. A comprehensive acoustic model and a new interactive glottal source were implemented. Perceptual tests and simulations made possible by the synthesizer contributed to deepen our knowledge of one of the most important characteristics of European Portuguese, the nasal vowels. First attempts at incorporating models of frication into the articulatory synthesizer are presented, demonstrating the potential of performing fricative synthesis based on broad articulatory configurations. Synthesis of nonsense words and Portuguese words with vowels and nasal consonants are also shown. Despite not capable of competing with mainstream concatenative speech synthesis, the antropomorphic approach to speech synthesis, known as articulatory synthesis, proved as a valuable tool for Phonetics research and teaching. This was particularly true for the European Portuguese nasal vowels.

Study on Unit-Selection and Statistical Parametric Speech Synthesis Techniques
One of the interesting topics on multimedia domain is concerned with empowering computer in order to speech production. Speech synthesis is granting human abilities to the computer for speech production. Data-based approach and process-based approach are the two main approaches on speech synthesis. Each approach has its varied challenges. Unit-selection speech synthesis and statistical parametr...
متن کاملEuropean Portuguese MRI based speech production studies
Knowledge of the speech production mechanism is essential for the development of speech production models and theories. Magnetic Resonance Imaging delivers high quality images of soft tissues, has multiplanar capacity and allows for the visualization of the entire vocal tract. To our knowledge, there are no complete and systematic Magnetic Resonance Imaging studies of European Portuguese produc...
متن کاملConstructing Physically Realistic VCV Stimuli for the Perception of Stop Voicing in European Portuguese
In this book chapter we present the generation of physically realistic stimuli with a biomechanical speech production model, with the aim to produce perceptually appropriate VCV sets for the European Portuguese (EP) voicing distinction. The duration measures necessary for the biomechanical model were extracted from an extensive EP speech production database, recorded for this aim. The same data...
متن کاملApplication of Monte Carlo Simulation in the Assessment of European Call Options
In this paper, the pricing of a European call option on the underlying asset is performed by using a Monte Carlo method, one of the powerful simulation methods, where the price development of the asset is simulated and value of the claim is computed in terms of an expected value. The proposed approach, applied in Monte Carlo simulation, is based on the Black-Scholes equation which generally def...
متن کاملNUMERICAL SIMULATION OF COMBUSTION SYNTHESIS OF ALUMINIDE INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS
Combustion synthesis is a special thermophysico-chemical process applied for production of intermetallic compounds. In the present work, a reaction–diffusion numerical model was developed to analyze the combustion synthesis of aluminide intermetallics by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis process. In order to verify the reliability of the numerical model, an experimental setup was desi...
